When we ran our Ask the Experts with ARM CPU guru Peter Greenhalgh some of you had GPU questions that went unanswered. A few weeks ago we set out to address the issue and ARM came back with Jem Davies to help. Jem is an ARM Fellow and VP of Technology in the Media Processing Division, and he's responsible for setting the GPU and video technology roadmaps for the company. Jem is also responsible for advanced product development as well as technical investigations of potential ARM acquisitions. Mr. Davies holds three patents in the fields of CPU and GPU design and got his bachelor's from the University of Cambridge.

If you've got any questions about ARM's Mali GPUs (anything on the roadmap at this point), the evolution of OpenGL, GPU compute applications, video/display processors, GPU power/performance, heterogeneous compute or more feel free to ask away in the comments.     Are there any plans to scale the GPU beyond the phone and tablet? Could we see larger Mali GPU's in TV, Automotive and AIO markets for example?

    We already have a huge presence in the DTV and STB market. We are the market leader in GPU-enabled devices in these fields.

    I hope i'm not too late, or too direct. I would like to know if you guys are coming out with an HSA product anytime soon? You cover such a wide market, a product from you might get the wheels rolling on the software side.

    At this time I cannot provide any information on ARM’s GPU roadmap beyond what's on the chart Anand posted to kick off this thread.

    However, ARM has been at the heart of the HSA Foundation: we helped build the Foundation and bring in some of the members. We’ve also been very involved, putting our best experts (CPU, GPU, memory system, runtime APIs etc.) into the Working Groups to help define the specifications that are being announced.

    Will ARM consider adding more high reliability variants to the Mali GPU in the future, or consider other efforts to offer IP oriented toward the industrial market?

    E.g. Secondary monitoring circuitry to a output that can kill the display independent of a software freeze, or additional ECC options.

    Adapting Mali GPUs to be more suited to other markets is something we look at all the time, such as adding high-reliability features to make it more suitable for servers, High Performance Computers (HPC, or so-called supercomputers) and industrial. There’s no technical reason we couldn’t decide to go there, it’s just a decision to be based on cost and reward. Adding ECC/parity to memories within the GPU is a pretty well-trodden path – the guys in the CPU group have already done this for their CPUs.
